How does one go about preparing students to live and thrive in an increasingly complex world? How can they be taught the skills necessary to face the violence and crises that often take center stage? Further, why address such subjects in schools? If asked to describe the state of the world today, most responses will not be positive. Yet this is the world that the next generation of young adults must enter. Violence and extremist ideologies are commonplace. Students lack basic analytical skills, and struggle to learn them. The values of critical thinking and contextual understanding are disappearing. But as they begin to take on civic duties, students must be able to thrive in the era they live in, especially one where the threat of terror haunts everyday life. This curriculum seeks to provide a structure for teachers to help their students develop the skills and awareness necessary to live in today's world. It explores the themes of terrorism, extremism, and violence through the lens of literature, which offers a unique pathway for students to engage with these difficult topics. An emphasis on critical thinking and reasoning allows for skill development that will not only bring academic benefits, but will also provide a strong foundation for whatever life brings. This curriculum is intended to be a guide, and includes Flexible scheduling Analytical debate and essay topics Interactive classroom activities Discussion-based lessons that encourage critical thinking Additional resources for educators
